Brother Interview: Ken Sears '11

This week's brother interview is on brother Ken Sears '11!

Basic Stuff:
1. Your name, as you would prefer it to be stated?
Ken or Kenny Sears (Kenneth is a bit too formal for me)

2. Your current location?
Pittsburgh, PA

3. Your Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn account links (or other websites as well)?
No Facebook or Twitter, I have a LinkedIn, but I don’t often use it. I tend to shy away from Social Media.

Fraternity Stuff:
4. Badge Number?
#144

5. Pledge Class Name?
Phi Class

6. Fraternity Nickname, if you remember it?
G6

7. Story behind how you got your nickname, if you remember it?
Yeah I remember, my Big said that there were three G’s that represent me. He said I was a gentlemen, a giant, and a genius. I had let something slip to him towards the end of pledging about some past relations, after hearing about it he decided that I was twice a 3G (3G X 2 = G6). Although it definitely was influenced by the fact that the song “Like a G6” was popular at the time.

8. Your fondest memory of being a Phi Psi?
Being Educators with Eric DeStasio was pretty awesome, bringing in the AA’s to the fraternity was a crazy but rewarding experience.

9. Your most embarrassing moment as a Phi Psi?
Probably my Big/Little night, ended up on the couch with my Big (Pretty sure there was a picture of us cuddling at some point). From what I don’t remember, I think I had a good time.

10. Your proudest moment as a Phi Psi?
There were several times when it felt an overwhelming sense of pride being part of NJE; after seeing brothers helping out with service project or just making sure someone got home safe or some how winning Grand Chapter! However the first memory that comes to mind was winning Greek Week 2011, after we won the tug-of-war we just felt on top of the world.

11. Any unique memories from your time as a Phi Psi?
I don’t know about unique, but heading to Tomo with a bunch of brother for the all you can eat sushi was always a good time.

12. Any fraternal advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Nothing new I can say here that hasn’t all ready been said, but make the most out of it. Because on my academic and career goals I spent most of my time working on school and jobs and I definitely missed out. While I am happy with where I am, you can never get that time back and I definitely wish I had a few more crazy nights back at Rowan.

13. When was the last time you visited Rowan or the chapter?
I snuck back there for a weekend last November

14. What is favorite event the chapter holds?
Along with all the important stuff, I always liked the Thanksgiving Dinner; it was just a time to hang out and be with your brothers

15. Who's the 1 brother you want to reconnect with / see interviewed here?
Nick Holsman, is far to interesting to have not been interviewed yet

16. Name 1 friend you made in NJE you still keep in touch with...
Haven’t kept in touch very well, but I talk to Kevin Sweeney and Joe Chen, every now and then.

Career Stuff:
17. Year you graduated from Rowan?
2014

18. Degree(s) you graduated Rowan with?
B.S. in Civil Engineering

19. Any advanced degrees or certifications you have?
I have my Engineering-in-Training Certificate, and currently working on my M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering

20. Your current occupation?
Professional Student (at least that is what my father calls me) at Carnegie Mellon University, basically I work 70 hours a week and make less then minimum wage, but at least I am not paying for my education.

21. Number of years in that occupation?
I started last July, but recently passed my qualifying exams so I will be here for about 4-5 years in total.

22. Any career advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Not sure if I am in any place to give advice, but I suppose I will give some anyway. Always have a plan for your future but always be ready to change that plan when opportunities come along. I have no idea what my future holds, and that just excites me more but I know that I am working towards something I want.

23. What's one piece of advice you'd give every undergraduate about networking?
Do it! I always struggled with it and it can be awkward to go out and talk to people but once those relationships are formed they can pave a path to opportunities and jobs. Even just a few minutes conservation can be enough to get your resume out of the stack and considered for a position.

Relationships/Family/Personal Stuff:
24. Are you currently in a relationship? If so, with who and for how long?
I am, I have been with my girlfriend Tina for about a year and a half.

25. Do you have kids? If so, how old and their names?
Nope, but maybe someday

26. Hobbies that you are currently into? What do you like to do in your spare time?
Currently been really into visiting micro-breweries in different parts of the country. I really like getting outdoors when I can just to go camping or hiking. I read whenever I can, program video games, and travel as often as possible. Trying to get to all of the states and continents; I am about half way there for both.
