Brother Interview: Bryan Gunn '10

This week's brother interview is on brother Bryan Gunn '10!

Basic Stuff:
1. Your name, as you would prefer it to be stated?
Gunn (Bryan Gunn)

2. Your current location?
4813 Hamilton Drive, Voorhees NJ 08043

3. Your Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn account links (or other websites as well)?
There is bound to be somebody on Twitter like me for you to follow.

Fraternity Stuff:
4. Badge Number?
#136

5. Pledge Class Name?
(drum roll) The Upsilons!!!!!

6. Fraternity Nickname, if you remember it?
Hollywood

7. Story behind how you got your nickname, if you remember it?
My big derived the name “Hollywood” from the testosterone filled 1986 film Top Gun, and combined it with a well-known characteristic of mine; that I was more often than not dressed up in costumes for the majority of my time on campus. I assume he felt the call-sign Hollywood was the perfect mix of ego and tragedy struggling for a sense of purpose… Or maybe I read into it too much…yeah it was probably just Top Gun.

8. Your fondest memory of being a Phi Psi?
I forged countless memories during my time as an undergrad, some intentional, and most, completely by accident. And that was what made it so much fun. I truly cannot replicate many of the experiences (and in some cases wouldn’t want to!). One memory does come to mind. I was sitting in the double-bedroom upstairs at 411, playing Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) on acoustic guitar with about twenty people singing along in harmony. It was a strange moment. The mix of people in the room, some about to graduate, and some never really around, were all just in bliss singing along together…it was bittersweet.

9. Your most embarrassing moment as a Phi Psi?
I know this question is supposed to be funny, and the answer should invariably involve me doing something absurd, so I’m sorry to let you down, but SPOILER ALERT, it’s not very silly. My most embarrassing moment as a Phi-Psi, is also my most embarrassing moment as a person, and it occurred on a cold winter night a few years back. Feel free to ask me in person sometime. However looking back, it only made me a better person. So, suck it Trebek!

10. Your proudest moment as a Phi Psi?
My proudest moment as a Phi Psi was, and still is, Evan Stone.

11. Any unique memories from your time as a Phi Psi?
All of them. From catching a rogue Bat dressed as shirtless police officers, hosting the Hurricane Party at 411, to being showered with Energy Drinks after what felt like winning the world series as Phi Psi won tug-of-war….all of them were unique, and special to me.

12. Any fraternal advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
There exists a balance between the pure entertainment of chaos, and professional excellence. Find it, and you will never regret anything for the rest of your life.

13. When was the last time you visited Rowan or the chapter?
Spring 2014 Initiation. I broke into the Church early before anyone arrived and hid Chaty’s windbreaker on the drum set. I should visit more often. From what I hear, the chapter hasn’t had enough Storm Troopers on campus lately…and that’s just not acceptable.

14. What is favorite event the chapter holds?
Any service event! I made it out to some events pretty far away from campus, but I always wish I had made more of them. It’s a great feeling to be a part of them, and really speaks volumes about us….the great joy of serving others. Our lives should reflect that. Our community should be better for having us in it, wherever we are. *insert Batman quote*…seriously though, service events is where the brotherhood shines. Selflessness is a quality that is seldom found. Struggle, and strive for it always.

15. Who's the 1 brother you want to reconnect with / see interviewed here?
Nike Swoosh

16. Name 1 friend you made in NJE you still keep in touch with...
I have the distinct pleasure of still keeping steamy fresh relations with my silly pledge class, Dr. Kevin Hartnett, Matt B., Sean, AJ, and many more that I still consider dear friends.

Career Stuff:
17. Year you graduated from Rowan?
Honestly, who graduates anymore? That was so 2013.

18. Degree(s) you graduated Rowan with?
Got an associates degree, then transferred to Rowan for Law & Justice.

19. Any advanced degrees or certifications you have?
I am a certified Open Water Scuba Diver, previously licensed EMT, Advanced Life Support Instructor, and still hold a bunch of meaningless FEMA certifications. I’m certified fresh too.

20. Your current occupation?
I am currently an executive in Retail Loss Prevention/Investigations.

21. Number of years in that occupation?
About 3.5 years now.

22. Any career advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
You can fix anything, except your reputation. Work hard, meet people, and show them you’re potential. Be dedicated to everything you do, even if you’re not where you want to be right now. “The Universe doesn’t give you what you ask for with your thoughts, it gives you what you demand with your actions.” Apply this to your career, and you will be successful.

23. What's one piece of advice you'd give every undergraduate about networking?
Networking is not about Facebook, or Twitter, or LinkedIn, it’s about using your current relationships to extend your possibilities. See question 22, and don’t rely on anyone else to get you where you want to go. Networking can be a great tool, but only if you’re worth vouching for.

Relationships/Family/Personal Stuff:
24. Are you currently in a relationship? If so, with who and for how long?
I’m still searching the vast sea for that one particular harbor.

25. Do you have kids? If so, how old and their names?
Negative.

26. Hobbies that you are currently into? What do you like to do in your spare time?
I play as many instruments as often as I can, and have a passionate romance with the cinema. I jump out of planes on occasion, and aggressively study craft beer in the field. Contrary to popular belief, I do not know EVERYTHING about wildlife, but I’m doing my best guys so just calm down already.

27. Anything you would like to share with other brothers through the blog regarding your relationship/family/personal life?
