Brother Interview: Anthony Reid '10

This week's brother interview is on brother Anthony Reid '10!

Basic Stuff:
1. Your name, as you would prefer it to be stated?
Reid

2. Your current location?
Columbus, NJ when I’m home from school. Otherwise I reside in Pomona, NJ at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

3. Your Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn account links (or other websites as well)?
https://www.facebook.com/anthony.reid.969

Fraternity Stuff:
4. Badge Number?
#127

5. Pledge Class Name?
Tau

6. Fraternity Nickname, if you remember it?
Funny Ass Guy (F.A.G.)

7. Story behind how you got your nickname, if you remember it?
During the Alumni Dinner before I was initiated, I was talking to Brother Ryan Duca about football and we were arguing about the Cowboys and Eagles. Apparently word got back to my Big, Bill Collins that I am a “funny ass guy” with all of my sports knowledge and remarks. My Big wanted to continue the Cassino tree branch tradition of an acronym for a nickname and decided to name me F.A.G.

8. Your fondest memory of being a Phi Psi?
There are a couple of good ones but I’ll only list a couple here to keep it brief. First would be going to Cabo San Lucas in January 2010 . I’d be glad to share stories if you ask for them, good and bad. Second would be attending the Grand Arch Council in 2012 in San Antonio. Third would be living at 411 for three years and being around the Brotherhood all the time. Whether it was alumni showing up randomly, sports games, mixers, date parties, St. Patrick’s Day extravaganza, or random parties there will always be great memories that happened at 411 I’ll never forget.

9. Your most embarrassing moment as a Phi Psi?
Phi class initiation party at 411

10. Your proudest moment as a Phi Psi?
Being at the Grand Arch Council with Brothers in 2012 to accept the Grand Chapter Award for what New Jersey Epsilon had accomplished by the Brotherhood over the past decade. It was like winning the World Series or Super Bowl and I was so proud of New Jersey Epsilon with what the current and past undergraduates had accomplished with service, academics, and philanthropies.

11. Any unique memories from your time as a Phi Psi?
St. Patrick’s Day 2011, Tau and Psi class initiations, Cabo, GAC, and many events at 411.

12. Any fraternal advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
You don’t need a position to make a change or implement an idea. Don’t be afraid to speak up at meetings or communicate your ideas to Brothers.

13. When was the last time you visited Rowan or the chapter?
This past March during spring break.

14. What is favorite event the chapter holds?
Initiation hands down.

Career Stuff:
15. Year you graduated from Rowan?
Spring 2013

16. Degree(s) you graduated Rowan with?
Bachelor of Arts in Health and Exercise Science: Health Promotion and Fitness Management

17. Any advanced degrees or certifications you have?
I’m currently attending the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey for my Doctorate of Physical Therapy.

18. Any career advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
A couple of things. First always have an updated resume. If you’ve never created one before or need advice don’t hesitate to ask me or any Brother for help. Second get involved. My first year and a half at Rowan I wasn’t involved in anything. I decided to step out of my comfort zone and challenged myself by joining different clubs and organizations such as PROS and RAH.

19. What's one piece of advice you'd give every undergraduate about networking?
Whatever your major is, see if there is an alumni that has a Bachelor’s similar to yours. Anyone with a Health and Exercise Science or Biological Sciences degree I’d be glad to help. Also as a former orientation leader, I’d be glad to help with class schedules and getting involved with other organizations at Rowan.

Relationships/Family/Personal Stuff:
20. Are you currently in a relationship? If so, with who and for how long?
Yes with my girlfriend Danielle for a little over two years.

21. Hobbies that you are currently into? What do you like to do in your spare time?
Anything regarding Philadelphia sports because I’m a diehard Philadelphia fan, fantasy sports leagues (baseball and football), WWE, Big Brother, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Clash of Clans, and working out.

22. Anything you would like to share with other brothers through the blog regarding your relationship/family/personal life?
Two main things. Everyone says to not burn bridges in life but one of the hardest things in life to do that I’ve learned with my time as an undergraduate was learning what bridges to build and what bridges to burn. In the end you have to follow your heart towards your goals. Whether it’s changing your major, ending a friendship/relationship, being afraid to step out of your comfort zone, etc, challenge yourself to be the best person you can be while holding your fraternal values close to heart to guide you. People are going to knock you down at times but remember to get back up and strive towards your goals. Another piece of advice I have is “nothing is ever as bad as it seems.” Always try to remain optimistic or worry free regarding different situations in life. Life will throw you many curveballs but you can handle anything that comes your way. And from the words of Jerry Nelson, remember “If it is to be, it is up to me.”
