Brother Interview: Dean Ialacci '12

This week's brother interview is on brother Dean Ialacci '12!

Basic Stuff:
1. Your name, as you would prefer it to be stated?
Dean Ialacci

2. Your current location?
Hamilton, NJ

3. Your Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn account links (or other websites as well)?
Facebook.com/dialacci
Twitter.com/DeanIalacci – Honestly, I don’t even use it. Check it out if you want, but it won’t be exciting.
And I’m on LinkedIn somewhere.

Fraternity Stuff:
4. Badge Number?
174

5. Pledge Class Name?
Omega

6. Fraternity Nickname, if you remember it?
Caulk Gun

7. Story behind how you got your nickname, if you remember it?
Seeing as how I am in the bastard side of the Wiedman Tree, post-Monsu, my nickname had to relate to tools somehow. During pledging, some of the brothers felt I didn’t show up to as much as I could have, and they assumed that whenever I wasn’t with them, I was with my girlfriend. My big brother has a sick mind and sense of humor, and here we are.

8. Your fondest memory of being a Phi Psi?
Having between 30 and 40 brothers show up at my house for my graduation party/surprise engagement to Alisa.

9. Your most embarrassing moment as a Phi Psi?
Almost running out of time to find a bathroom in Cabo and going up to a Mexican stranger’s house to see if I can use theirs. The woman did not speak any English, at all. She did, however, still let me use her bathroom.

10. Your proudest moment as a Phi Psi?
All of Greek Week 2014. Started week with trivia and banner, got better with penny wars, killed it in stroll, held our ground in swimming, then finished field events with a respectable second place overall. Highlight of the week goes to either our stroll team’s performance or getting the entire Greek population at Rowan to chant Phi Psi for us after an unnamed rival organization decided to be sore losers.

11. Any unique memories from your time as a Phi Psi?
The American Leadership Academy experience as a whole. I met some awesome people from all over the country, and even became 21st century pen-pals with some Mexican locals. It was a mind-opening experience and helped me take a little better control over my life.

Also, on a less serious level, some shout outs. The @midnight game with Kyle O’Connell, watching Alex Kuhn complain at literally everything in the caf while stuffing his face with mediocre food, Evan Stone and his obsession with “calling it”, the Omega class as a whole, Hugo spilling paint in the basement, inflating AJ Carchidi’s ego by liking things on facebook for him even when they were dumb posts, Matt Stacker’s inability to distinguish between chickens and pigs, ya boy Stevey Shocks, helping Jeff Komiskey not be a terrible little, the “Get-Shit-Done” committee with Matt Bratsch, Joe Chen Never Again, Derick Palos telling me it’s unsafe to “hop” in the shower, Jerald the Moose, Luke Nanney’s terrific description of my habitual mixer night pattern, and every time we sat around drinking and getting absolutely nothing done other than learn about our brothers that much more.

12. Any fraternal advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Get involved, stay involved. When you feel the burnout coming, take a breather and reorganize yourself, then come back at it even better. In the past a lot of guys have gotten discouraged and let apathy get the better of them, and it spreads. One apathetic brother will cause another, and the likelihood of another brother not caring goes up when he feels like he’s the only one trying. Instead of letting it discourage you, work to reverse the process and return the chapter to a better state than before.

13. When was the last time you visited Rowan or the chapter?
Just a week ago, helping Alisa move out of her house near campus.

14. What is favorite event the chapter holds?
I absolutely love every time we visit the South Jersey Field of Dreams in Absecon, NJ. Larry, who runs the program, has a heart of gold and everyone there loves when we show up to help out. (http://www.thewhitonline.com/phi-kappa-psi-teams-up-with-field-of-dreams-charity-to-build-playground/)

15. Who's the 1 brother you want to reconnect with / see interviewed here?
Hard to say, most of the ones I knew really well I still talk to often.

16. Name 1 friend you made in NJE you still keep in touch with...
Well, as a recent graduate… most of them. But otherwise I like to keep in touch with Alex Kuhn, Kevin Still, and—unfortunately—Evan Stone.

Career Stuff:
17. Year you graduated from Rowan?
2014

18. Degree(s) you graduated Rowan with?
Some sort of Marketing BS.

19. Any advanced degrees or certifications you have?
None

20. Your current occupation?
Job-hunter. Though I do have a prospective job that is looking promising, if I land it then I will be doing lead marketing work for a startup business in Princeton.

21. Number of years in that occupation?
Approximately zero.

22. Any career advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Putting in lots of applications is fine, but pick a job (or a few) that you really want, and focus on them. Do work for the company before you even interview, and show them that you can provide tangible work before they even pay you.

23. What's one piece of advice you'd give every undergraduate about networking?
Treat every person you meet like they might be hiring you one day.

Relationships/Family/Personal Stuff:
24. Are you currently in a relationship? If so, with who and for how long?
Yes. Alisa Ridolfino, since October 2009. For those of you that aren’t in the loop, we just got engaged May 31st.

25. Do you have kids? If so, how old and their names?
Nope. Side note—I beat teen pregnancy!

26. Hobbies that you are currently into? What do you like to do in your spare time?
At this point I mostly like just hanging out with people and playing video games. I do like snowboarding in the winter, but it is an expensive hobby. Really though, I’m happiest just hanging around and talking about absolutely nothing with good friends.

27. Anything you would like to share with other brothers through the blog regarding your relationship/family/personal life?
If I’m busy over the next two years doing life stuff, I truly apologize. Don’t assume I don’t care though, because I do, and I plan to visit as much as I can between wedding planning, job searching/performing, house hunting, and everything else.

If anyone is curious as to my plans with my life and Alisa for the coming years, it goes something like this. Get jobs, save up for a year, get a house (attempting to skip the apartment at all costs), get married sometime in Summer 2016, then a few years later start a family proper. So, if anyone has any great house-hunting or wedding planning tips, please send them my way. I will still be involved in the coming years, just know that it may be a bit hectic for me.
