Brother Interview: Frank Van Emburgh '10

This week's brother interview is on brother Frank Van Emburgh '10!  Don't know who brother Van Emburgh is?!?!  Read below to find out!

Basic Stuff:
1. Your name, as you would prefer it to be stated?
Frank Van Emburgh (formerly Frank Rohloff). I had a name change after I graduated and took my mother's maiden name, for those of you who are still wondering who Brother Van Emburgh is.

2. Your current location?
Maple Shade, NJ

Fraternity Stuff:
4. Badge Number?
125

5. Pledge Class Name?
Tau - Spring 2010

6. Fraternity Nickname, if you remember it?
Pussy Bear, or P-Bear for the kids

7. Story behind how you got your nickname, if you remember it?
I look like a bear and I complained to my big that I was going to drop out of my pledge class a week before initiation. So Pussy. Boom, Pussy Bear! My big is clever and I don't get called much else in the presence of brothers, so this name stuck hard.

8. Your fondest memory of being a Phi Psi?
I have a lot of fond memories as a Phi Psi. I liked the initiation speech I gave to the Chi class. I love the parties I dont fully remember.(Initiaion was infamous.) I think the fondest out of all of that though was just the brotherhood in general. The feeling that you just gained an extension on your family when you get in.

9. Your most embarrassing moment as a Phi Psi?
Hospital...Hospital...

10. Your proudest moment as a Phi Psi?
Even though I never have a ton of time to get down to Rowan I am consistently proud of my little. I'm not big on tooting horns, so I'll just say he's doing well.

11. Any unique memories from your time as a Phi Psi?
Most of my "unique" memories I can't share. Most of them involved me at some point saying, "Well I never thought I'd see that in my lifetime."

12. Any fraternal advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Go to everything, pay attention to everyone, get your name out there, and collect connections. These people will help you in the long run emotionally, mentally, and in your career. The person you're drunkenly stumbling home with may be a CEO one day, and he'll remember who's shoulder propped him up on that walk home.

13. When was the last time you visited Rowan or the chapter?
I'm kind of cheating but I went down in, like, January to sell my sectional to some of the Undergrads.

14. What is favorite event the chapter holds?
I was a po' boy so I was going to go to formal my Senior year, but we didn't have a formal that year. But I love initiation. The mystique of the whole event still hangs palpably in the air when you visit to take part.

15. Who's the 1 brother you want to reconnect with / see interviewed here?
Interview Joe Hankins or Sean Peterson.

16. Name 1 friend you made in NJE you still keep in touch with...
I see Ant weekly. I talk to Hammer daily. And if I'm talking to another brother, its someone from the Pi class.

Career Stuff:
17. Year you graduated from Rowan?
2011

18. Degree(s) you graduated Rowan with?
BA English

19. Any advanced degrees or certifications you have?
Level 2 SQL Querying Certification

20. Your current occupation?
IT Support Specialist/Lead

21. Number of years in that occupation?
3. 1.5 with this company and 1.5 with another.

22. Any career advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Its important to get a job out of college so you can start living life and paying off loans, but if you have the means wait it out for a job that will put you on the right path down the line. It is impossibly frustrating to explain to people why you would make a good copywriter with 3 years of IT experience. Also once you pick a path past experience dictates what recruiters will call you.

23. What's one piece of advice you'd give every undergraduate about networking?
Just do it. Go to conferences, go to events, go to everything fraternity related or not. I got my last two jobs because of the people I know; not the skills I have.

Relationships/Family/Personal Stuff:
24. Are you currently in a relationship? If so, with who and for how long?
I am currently engaged to Brittany Randall. We've been together for about 5 years. Wedding is October 17th 2015.

25. Do you have kids? If so, how old and their names?
No. Thank, God. We have a dog his name is Jake.

26. Hobbies that you are currently into? What do you like to do in your spare time?
I hike whenever I get a chance. I play soccer and softball in Westampton's Rec Leagues. I write.

27. Anything you would like to share with other brothers through the blog regarding your relationship/family/personal life?
Everything is going great, but if anyone knows about any writing jobs. Copywriting, articles, freelance stuff, or editing, let me know. Other than that, if you need someone to talk to or have a beer with, I'm around. Call me, email me, facebook, carrier pigeon, whatever.
