6. Fraternity Nickname, if you remember it?
Paco
7. Story behind how you got your nickname, if you remember it?
The first week as a new member (aka “pledging”) the chapter was helping SAB setup for the winter dance. I arrived earlier than the majority of the brothers since they went to the buffet and we all know they don’t serve burgers. Once they showed up, Armando turned to me and said “I’m tired of being the only Spanish guy. You are now Paco.” Which I responded “Si”. For the rest of the night I was called Paco and it stuck.
8. Your fondest memory of being a Phi Psi?
In the honor of my big’s badge number, I will give 3:
- Standing at the altar during my wedding. Having Chaty, my big, give a reading as my sister, Steve McDermott, Armando Sorchini, Russ Pocaro and Greg McDermott stood with me as my groomsmen. Rob Wiedman was our officiant.
- When Armando called me Paco the first time.
- When Chaty became my big.
9. Your most embarrassing moment as a Phi Psi?
My first mixer during rush. We were in the Oakwood house at the time and the chapter was hosting the lovely ladies of Phi Sigma Sigma. During the mixer ice breaking game, I had the “challenge” to use my best pickup line. It was “Come here often?”
10. Your proudest moment as a Phi Psi?
GAC San Antonio when we won the award. Not for Grand Chapter, but for man mile. For three reasons:
- Russ and I set our eyes on many chapter accomplishments. One of which was winning a Greek Week or Homecoming before we graduated. Mission Accomplished. Another was to get a man mile award at GAC.
- Winning the man mile award showed our chapter’s dedication to the fraternity at a national level. Having won the award at the same GAC we won Grand Chapter elevates NJE in the eyes of our national brothers. I am proud of this chapter and it is great to get recognition as a whole.
- Third and most self satisfying is that not only where the majority of brother in attendance 27s, not only were they Chaty tree members, but they were mostly from my branch. I challenge the 24s, other trees and the other branch to beat our numbers.
11. Any unique memories from your time as a Phi Psi?
Watching Justin roll down the hallway in the Victoria house on a computer chair. Every time I hear “Tricky” from Run DMC I think about that night.
12. When was the last time you visited Rowan or the chapter?
Initiation Fall of 2013
13. What is favorite event the chapter holds?
Formals are my favorite since my first date with Jenn was at my first formal as an alumnus. We try to make it back each year as an anniversary, but since the “boy child” it has become more difficult.
14. Who's the 1 brother you want to reconnect with / see interviewed here?
I am excited to hear from each and every brother. Even brothers who I talk to on a regular basis have had interview questions teach me something I didn’t already know about them.
15. Name 1 friend you made in NJE you still keep in touch with...
Just 1? I have been very blessed to have had the great joy of spending time with a large number of brothers each and every year since I joined.
