This week's brother interview is on brother Evan Stone '10!
Basic Stuff:
1. Your name, as you would prefer it to be stated?
Evan Stone. Some people call me Stone, so whichever you like better.
2. Your current location?
Voorhees, NJ
3. Your Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn account links (or other websites as well)?
www.facebook.com/estone35
www.twitter.com/evanstone35
I’m on Instagram and LinkedIn too.
Fraternity Stuff:
4. Badge Number?
137
5. Pledge Class Name?
Upsilon!
6. Fraternity Nickname, if you remember it?
Mr. Roboto
7. Story behind how you got your nickname, if you remember it?
During my time pledging, I discovered I had an incredible love for dancing, especially when I was drinking. I also discovered I’m pretty terrible at dancing and have no rhythm. Then came homecoming in 2010 where I played the part of Ron Weasley. After the girls spent a ridiculous amount of time attempting to teach me the dances, they made it so I only had to perform one of them. I’m not as bad now (at least I think so), but this Homecoming you can judge for yourself when I tear up the dance floor in Landmark.
8. Your fondest memory of being a Phi Psi?
My all-time favorite was ALA back in January of 2011. We had like 12 people from our chapter go. We met brothers from a few chapters in California, Massachusetts, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. I still keep in contact with a couple of them. The programs they offered were some of the best I’ve ever sat through. They made us better ourselves and our chapter so much. The city of Cabo is amazing as well, and being there with a bunch of brothers, even with ones we just met, was an experience like no other. If you’re an undergrad, I highly encourage you to consider going.
9. Your most embarrassing moment as a Phi Psi?
I have a few.
#1. is right before Greek Week in Spring 2011. We were on the intramural field with all of Theta Phi practicing field events. During a break, Steve Higbee asks if I want to race him in a sprint. So I say sure, and then everyone starts to watch. We’re running, and after the 100 meters, I managed to trip over air, landing face first into the ground. My mouth was filled with dirt, my nose and lips were bleeding, my face was all cut up and my shirt was grass/mud stained. Most of the fraternity and Theta Phi all got to see this happen.
#2. Every time I fell off my longboard in front of large groups of people.
#3. The time Eric DeStasio and a bunch of the Theta Phi house sisters found me naked in the Castle. This is a funny story, so ask me about it.
10. Your proudest moment as a Phi Psi?
The first is when I got my little, Simon Lee. That first year went by so quick and I had learned so much, so right then it felt time for me to pass it on. The second is when I was educator with Dom Latini. After guiding them for their 6 weeks of pledging, I felt incredibly proud watching them be initiated.
11. Any unique memories from your time as a Phi Psi?
Fall of 2011, when I lived in 411. Every year, everyone is always like “ew I don’t want to live there blah blah.” All school year living there, didn’t miss one mixer/weekend party or brother builder, was an Admissions Ambassador, and still managed to earn my highest GPA. But the crew living there made it unbelievable that Fall. I have way too many stories to type, so just ask me about it.
12. Any fraternal advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Be a “Yes man”, like the Jim Carey movie. I tried to not turn down any invitations to hangout with brothers. In the movie, Jim Carey’s life went from awful to amazing, he met wonderful people and experienced so many things he never thought he’d enjoy like traveling, running, and art, all by saying “yes” instead of no. So I did this. I’ve met so many people, had crazy experiences, and feel my college and Phi Psi experience was remarkable. By saying no, you can miss out on so much. That homework assignment that’s only a few points can wait a couple hours.
TL/DR, don’t turn down invitations to hang with brothers. You will miss out on way more than you think and wish you said yes in the end.
13. When was the last time you visited Rowan or the chapter?
Big/Little last Spring. And formal last year if that counts too.
14. What is favorite event the chapter holds?
Big/Little. The ceremony is so unique, and it’s the biggest step towards becoming a brother for pledges. Getting a little is something most people look forward to as well, so seeing the bigs joy is awesome.
15. Who's the 1 brother you want to reconnect with / see interviewed here?
My big, Greg Valver
16. Name 1 friend you made in NJE you still keep in touch with...
I talk to like 10 different brothers daily. But since hardly anybody has ever seen all 5 Upsilons together at once, all 5 of us still talk almost daily and hangout as a whole a lot.
Career Stuff:
17. Year you graduated from Rowan?
2013
18. Degree(s) you graduated Rowan with?
History, with minors in Psych and Education
19. Any advanced degrees or certifications you have?
Nothing real or useful
20. Your current occupation?
I’m working at a startup marketing firm based in Cherry Hill. I’m doing blog and content writing, and some social media.
21. Number of years in that occupation?
6 weeks
22. Any career advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Look for internships and make connections as early as you can. Talk to your advisors to see what else you can do with your degree to really expand your options.
23. What's one piece of advice you'd give every undergraduate about networking?
Be memorable to people so you stand out to them. You want them to remember you well.
Relationships/Family/Personal Stuff:
24. Are you currently in a relationship? If so, with who and for how long?
Single and ready to mingle.
25. Do you have kids? If so, how old and their names?
No kids.
26. Hobbies that you are currently into? What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love running. Currently training for the Philly marathon again this year with Andy Mac. I’m a ridiculously huge Flyers fan as well, so I watch them a lot in the winter. I also read a lot, play guitar, cook, and enjoy quality beers.
27. Anything you would like to share with other brothers through the blog regarding your relationship/family/personal life?
I love to talk, so just ask and I’d be more than happy to share more about me and get to know more about you.
