Fraternity Stuff:

20
5. Pledge Class Name?
Colony Class Gamma/Delta? Gelta? Delta
6. Fraternity Nickname, if you remember it?
HotBeef
7. Story behind how you got your nickname, if you remember it?
I remember exactly how I got my nickname. I was not a brother or a new member at the time I receive my nickname but I was, what’s known as, a friend of the program. The active members had submitted the chartering application a few weeks prior and on the day I received my nickname they were all hanging around the fraternity house(do not remember the name of the street it was on), awaiting to hear the results from national. While waiting a group of brothers headed to a local deli/sandwich shop (the name of which I can also not remember) and they grabbed me to go with them. I ordered a hot roast beef sandwich, a very normal order I might add and there was an attractive girl behind the counter calling out orders when they were ready. When my order was up she yelled out “HotBeef” and I said “that’s me” and the brothers who were there with me started laughing at my response and the name HotBeef stuck.
8. Your fondest memory of being a Phi Psi?
That almost an unfair question as all 7 years I spent as an undergrad and being around the fraternity were some of the best times of my life. Every chartering member you ask will probably say chartering and they are right to do so. It was a very special time in the history of the fraternity and the experience was amazing. The Spring Break trip we took was unforgettable. I have so many good memories as an undergrad so I would say my fondest were always just hanging out with the brothers at whatever house we had that year. I know it sounds boring but that’s really what makes being a brother of Phi Psi great.
9. Your most embarrassing moment as a Phi Psi?
I am not sure I had any embarrassing moments as a Phi Psi, maybe the few times I passed out in the bathroom of the house after a night out.
10. Your proudest moment as a Phi Psi?
Proudest moment of being a Phi Psi for me was the time I spent being VP, especially during initiation. The initiation we held during my first semester as VP was great, Duca (president at the time) and I went over the ceremony a bunch of times. Initiation went smoothly, I was able to enjoy the whole thing and be proud of it.
11. Any unique memories from your time as a Phi Psi?
I have definitely had some “unique” memories during my time, such as getting the call from brother Gillies that our first house had burnt down. Being a backstreet boy in a homecoming sketch (I am not a dancer), breaking my hand at a party we had, watching a lot of brothers graduate.
12. Any fraternal advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Enjoy your time as an undergrad (not too much or you’ll end up going to school for 8 years). Try to get involved as much as possible in the fraternity and use it to help you through school. Really get to know you fellow members and create positive friendships with them. You can end up with friends for life. As a young undergrad this may sound like an easy thing, but as you get older and take on responsibilities you realize it is easier to lose friends then to keep them.
13. When was the last time you visited Rowan or the chapter?
I visit Rowan Monday through Friday because I currently work there but I haven’t visited the chapter since 2011 I think for homecoming.
14. What is favorite event the chapter holds?
Initiation, and I am upset with myself that I haven’t been able to make any for a long time. Every semester I am busy and I tell myself that I will make it next semester and that never happens. Maybe this brother interview will kick my butt into gear and I will make the fall initiation.
15. Who's the 1 brother you want to reconnect with / see interviewed here?
Another impossible question, I miss every brother I have ever known and wish I could see them all regularly. That’s not a cop out, I was lucky to meet a lot of good, smart, interesting people during my time as an undergrad, that’s why I joined and why I stayed involved. I even thought about having a South Jersey alumni gathering at my house, after I found out there were a lot of alumni living in my area. Not sure if its ever going to happen because people are always busy but if it does at least I would get to reconnect with some of the alumni.
16. Name 1 friend you made in NJE you still keep in touch with...
Ryan Duca. We were in the Computer Science program as undergrads and have worked together and hang out pretty regularly.
Career Stuff:
17. Year you graduated from Rowan?
This one should be easy but I am not sure what year I actually “graduated” so I’ll give a range. Somewhere between 2004-2007
18. Degree(s) you graduated Rowan with?
Bachelor in Computer Science
19. Any advanced degrees or certifications you have?
Just completed my Network Certificate of Graduate Study program
20. Your current occupation?
Academic Technology Specialist at Rowan University
21. Number of years in that occupation?
I’ve been at Rowan for 2 years however I have been in the IT field for about 10 years.
22. Any career advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Yes, it is nice to have a goal and to know what you want to do and accomplish in life. However, to reach that goal it may take many steps and you’re going to encounter some failures along the way. The important thing is to try and learn every day at your job, no matter what job it is. Work hard to be good at your job no matter what it is, even if the job doesn’t fit what you want to be doing. Do not be afraid to take chances and don’t be afraid to change jobs/departments/careers, you never know what it will bring.
23. What's one piece of advice you'd give every undergraduate about networking?
I am probably not qualified to give advice about networking as I am not a “networker.” I would just say try and learn from everyone you meet and do not burn bridges, you never know whats going to happen or who you will need to rely on.
Relationships/Family/Personal Stuff:
24. Are you currently in a relationship? If so, with who and for how long?
Yes, I have been with Jen Knueppel for almost 11 years now.
25. Do you have kids? If so, how old and their names?
Yes, I have a daughter Mackenzie who is now 8
26. Hobbies that you are currently into? What do you like to do in your spare time?
Hobbies: video games, brew beer and that’s about it (seems like I need more hobbies).
27. Anything you would like to share with other brothers through the blog regarding your relationship/family/personal life?
Not really, lol not that I am a private person but just pretty boring.
