Brother Interview: Ryan Elliott '10

This week's brother interview is on brother Ryan Elliott '10!

Basic Stuff:
1. Your name, as you would prefer it to be stated?
Ryan Elliott

2. Your current location?
Mantua, NJ

3. Your Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn account links (or other websites as well)
https://www.facebook.com/ryan.elliott.92351

Fraternity Stuff:
4. Badge Number?
137

5. Pledge Class Name?
Upsilon class – the best pledge class a.k.a the upsies

6. Fraternity Nickname, if you remember it?
Dewalt (like the tool company)

7. Story behind how you got your nickname, if you remember it?
Well it’s been tradition in my tree to pick tool nicknames since my grand big was one. I also had a habit of going after Asian girls while I was in the fraternity; regularly heard words like yellow fever. What can I say? I developed a taste for exotics. Getting back to the story, dewalt is a tool company with yellow tools, thus it fit the bill of being a tool name and satisfying my yellow desire.

8. Your fondest memory of being a Phi Psi?
Our first upsilon night as a pledge class by far was one of the fondest memories. We all got together (minus the eventual abortion) and partook in lots of dry pledging. We exchanged our darkest secrets with one another and from that night on we were inseparable. It ended up becoming a tradition and to this day we still get together a few times a year for upsilon night.

9. Your most embarrassing moment as a Phi Psi?
Most embarrassing… a certain string of events that happened while I was blacked out at my initiation night. Ask anyone who was there, should be an interesting short story.

10. Your proudest moment as a Phi Psi?
A typical answer, but getting into the fraternity and being a part of something greater than myself with so much love for one another (no homo).

11. Any unique memories from your time as a Phi Psi?
All the upsilon nights, big little with that awesome sorority Tri Sig. Hate what happened to them. All the mornings waking up still drunk/hungover/tired to go do philanthropy events and everyone is miserable together.

12. Any fraternal advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Go out to every event, even if you’re feeling tired or you don’t want to. Chances are you might miss out on a great event people will be talking about the next day. Also chat up everyone you meet. Greek life has a wonderful network of people and you get to take away something from each interaction you have with those people.

13. When was the last time you visited Rowan or the chapter?
It’s been too long, a few years now I think.

14. What is favorite event the chapter holds?
Homecoming is always a great one, as is big/little night.

15. Who's the 1 brother you want to reconnect with / see interviewed here?
Bryant Chung, miss that tall Asian.

16. Name 1 friend you made in NJE you still keep in touch with...
All my upsies + Kevin Hartnett

Career Stuff:
17. Year you graduated from Rowan?
Winter 2013

18. Degree(s) you graduated Rowan with?
B.S. Biochemistry

19. Any advanced degrees or certifications you have?
Not at the moment, but working towards my masters degree in food safety at Michigan State University

20. Your current occupation?
QA/QC Technician at a cocoa production plant

21. Number of years in that occupation?
1.5 years

22. Any career advice you would give to an undergraduate Phi Psi today?
Network with as many people you know. Unfortunately in this world most of the times its who you know, not what you know. Don’t be afraid to take a job in a field you didn’t expect to work in. Always thought I’d do research or work in the pharma industry. I never expected to work in the food science industry but I love it and couldn’t be happier.

23. What's one piece of advice you'd give every undergraduate about networking?
Talk to everyone. I mean everyone. That guy standing in front of you in the grocery store line? Talk to him. That girl behind the desk at a job you’re interviewing at? Talk to her. You never know who someone is and what they might be able to do for you if you don’t interact with people. And one last thing - genuinely listen to what they are saying. There’s a difference between listening and hearing.

Relationships/Family/Personal Stuff:
24. Are you currently in a relationship? If so, with who and for how long?
Currently single. And you know what they say. When you’re single the pockets jingle and you’re free to mingle.

25. Do you have kids? If so, how old and their names?
Hell no, no kids til I’m at least 30. And then still only a maybe.

26. Hobbies that you are currently into? What do you like to do in your spare time?
Avid homebrewer. I make beer/mead/wine. Heavily into fitness and hit the gym 5-6x a week.

27. Anything you would like to share with other brothers through the blog regarding your relationship/family/personal life?
I was still in college mode after I got out. I still drank a lot and ate like crap. Finally got my shit together and cleaned up my diet and started working out/eating right. I look better and feel better. If you’re dating, it’ll put you ahead of the curve, since such a large portion of America is obese or overweight. If you’re married you’re wife will appreciate you taking care of yourself. Do yourself a favor. You only get one body; start working out and eating right if you don’t already.
